Rafiq al-Salihi, a member of the Parliamentary Transportation and Communications Committee, confirmed on Saturday that the committee is working to activate several strategic files related to the transportation sector, most notably the Development Road project and the Grand Faw Port, in addition to monitoring the status of the land, sea, and air transport sectors, as well as railways, ports, and Iraqi Airways.
Al-Salihi told the Information Agency, “The committee is monitoring the Ministry of Transportation’s work plan and its strategic projects, focusing on files of economic and service importance to Iraq, foremost among them the Development Road and the Grand Faw Port.”
He added, “The committee is monitoring the implementation phases of the Development Road project, the progress rates, and the challenges it faces, in addition to monitoring the status of the Grand Faw Port, as these are vital projects relied upon to support the economy and enhance Iraq’s position in regional and international trade and transportation.”
He pointed out that “the committee is also monitoring the status of Baghdad International Airport and the need to establish a new airport, as well as developing the transportation system, automating services, and introducing modern means of transportation that contribute to improving the level of service provided to citizens.”
Al-Salihi pointed out that “the committee is working on activating the amendment file for the Transportation Law No. 80 of 1983, with the aim of modernizing legislation to keep pace with developments in the transportation sector, in addition to monitoring the resources and revenues of the ministry’s departments and ways to increase their contribution to the public treasury.”
He emphasized that “the committee will continue to monitor the work of the Ministry of Transportation’s departments in detail to review their work plans and the challenges they face, as well as to monitor the progress of work, projects, and completion rates at the General Company for Iraqi Ports.”
