Burhan Sheikh Raouf, a leader in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, confirmed on Wednesday his party’s full support for Nouri al-Maliki, the candidate of the Coordination Framework for Prime Minister. He pointed out that the PUK’s relationship with the Framework forces extends for many years, expressing his hope that the issue of the presidency will be resolved in favor of the PUK candidate in the next parliamentary session.
Sheikh Raouf stated to Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) reiterates its firm stance of respecting the choices of the Coordination Framework, specifically in nominating Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, as the candidate for the next prime minister.” He explained that “this choice enjoys the party’s appreciation and support, both within Parliament and in the upcoming constitutional processes.”
He added that “the PUK has historical and positive ties with the leaders of the Coordination Framework, strengthened by the various stages of the political process,” calling on the Framework’s forces to “reciprocate by supporting the PUK candidate during the presidential election session scheduled for the 11th of this month.” The
PUK leader pointed out that “the ball is now in the court of the Council of Representatives to decide on the presidential election and proceed with forming the government,” noting “the importance of achieving the legal quorum of 220 members.”
