Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) MP Dana Aziz confirmed on Sunday the continued deadlock within the Kurdish political landscape due to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) stance. He indicated that the PUK still rejects the option of a consensus candidate for the presidency.
Aziz told Al-Maalouma, “The PUK insists on not moving towards a consensus candidate that would satisfy all Kurdish and national parties and clings to its own candidate for the presidency unilaterally.”
He added, “This insistence complicates the political scene and hinders reaching common understandings that would end the current stalemate.” He explained that “the KDP had hoped to reach an understanding that would guarantee genuine representation for Kurdish forces in Baghdad according to their electoral entitlements.”
Aziz clarified that “the current stage requires political flexibility and prioritizing the public interest, but the PUK’s lack of consensus leaves the presidential issue open to various scenarios within the Council of Representatives.”
