The head of the Maysan Provincial Council, Mustafa Adair Al-Muhammadawi, gave the Iraqi government until next Thursday to open the Al-Shaib border crossing, warning of resorting to civil disobedience and blocking roads in the province if the demand is not met. Al-Muhammadawi stressed that failure to open the crossing within the specified deadline could lead to escalating measures, including civil disobedience and road blockades, to pressure for the reopening of the crossing, as reported by Al-Sumaria.
Dozens of citizens in Maysan province blocked the main road leading to the oil companies on Sunday, in protest against the federal government’s decision to close the Al-Shaib border crossing with Iran.
On October 20, the Iraqi government decided to close the Al-Shaib border crossing until further notice, a move that angered the Iranian Interior Ministry, which confirmed that it had not received prior notification of the decision from Baghdad.
