Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council announced on Tuesday that preliminary investigations into the case of detained Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs Adnan Mohammed Mahmoud have led to the seizure of dozens of properties and millions of dollars belonging to him and to people connected to the case.
The judiciary’s media office quoted a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, quoting the investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court, as saying that the preliminary investigations in the case of the detained defendant Adnan Muhammad Mahmoud, who held the position of Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs, and his group resulted in taking extensive legal measures that contributed to seizing a number of funds and properties belonging to him and to people associated with the case.
The judge explained that the initial investigative procedures have so far resulted in the seizure of approximately 40 properties in the governorates of Baghdad, Salah al-Din and Erbil, as well as the seizure of cash amounts estimated at about 10 million US dollars, 3 billion Iraqi dinars, in addition to gold jewelry estimated at about one and a half kilograms of gold.
He added that the investigations also resulted in the seizure of large quantities of light and medium weapons, noting that the investigations are still ongoing to uncover all the people and entities associated with the crime.
It is worth noting that an informed source told Shafaq News Agency last Saturday that a special security force arrested the Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs (Director General of the Northern Refineries Company and Baiji Refinery) “Adnan Hamad Hamoud”, on charges related to corruption cases.
The source explained that the arrest was carried out in the “Ishaqi” area of Salah al-Din Governorate, and came after Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi declared war on corruption and audited government contracts.
In a related context, a security source told Shafaq News Agency last Sunday that a security force coming from Baghdad arrested the director of the financial department of the North Refineries Company in Baiji, north of Salah al-Din Governorate, indicating that “the reasons for the arrest or the charges against him have not been officially announced yet.”
