Electricity Minister Ali Saadi Wahib directed on Saturday the formation of a special central emergency room to address the challenges of the summer of 2026 and the preparations related to the Arbaeen pilgrimage in the city of Karbala, with the aim of ensuring the stability of the electrical system and securing the supply of power to the pilgrims in a continuous and stable manner during the pilgrimage period.

During his meeting with members of the Emergency Committee, the Minister stressed the importance of rapid field action to address technical and service problems, emphasizing the need for committee members to go to work sites in the field and not just monitor from inside offices.

He also directed that the committee members be given the necessary powers to ensure the smooth flow of work and to overcome administrative and technical obstacles, enabling them to perform their duties without hindrance, and in line with the requirements of the current stage and the magnitude of the upcoming challenges.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Electricity, the emergency committee includes the production, transmission and distribution sectors, and an urgent action plan has been put in place for immediate implementation, which includes monitoring loads, addressing bottlenecks and raising the readiness of stations, lines and networks, to ensure the stability of the supply of electrical power during the summer months and the Arbaeen pilgrimage period.

This comes as the Deputy Minister of Electricity for Production Affairs, Mohammed Nima, recently confirmed that Iraq’s power generation system is going through “very critical circumstances” due to a decline in domestic gas production and a halving of gas imports from Iran as a result of the ongoing war and regional tensions. Iraq has suffered from a chronic electricity shortage for decades due to sanctions and successive wars.
