The Iraqi government announced on Sunday a three-day period of national mourning for the martyrdom of Sayyid Ali al-Husseini al-Khamenei. Government spokesman Basim al-Awadi stated in a statement, “With great sadness and sorrow, we offer our condolences to the noble Iranian people and the entire Islamic nation on the martyrdom of the scholar and mujahid, the Supreme Leader, His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husseini al-Khamenei, whom we consider to be among the first of the Prophet’s family, as a result of a blatant act of aggression and a reprehensible act that violates all human and moral norms and is in clear violation of international laws and conventions.”
He added, “With the passing of the martyred Sayyid, His Eminence has crowned his journey, which served the Iranian people, with the crown of martyrdom and loyalty to principles, defending his nation against injustice and tyranny, seeking the path of truth, and striving to serve the causes of the Islamic nation and humanity in general.”
He also stressed that “Iraq, in this context, renews its serious call for an immediate and unconditional cessation of military operations and actions that are taking the region to unprecedented levels of violence, fueling conflict, and undermining international peace and security.”
He also noted that “the Iraqi government has declared three days of public mourning throughout Iraq.”
