A report by The Al-Bina News website on Monday confirmed that President Donald Trump’s recent moves in Venezuela, when taken together with his previous foreign policy actions, signal the end of what could be called the “Iraq Syndrome”—a paralyzing mindset that has plagued American foreign policy for more than two decades.
The report, translated by the Information Agency, stated that “the Iraq Syndrome emerged after the failure of the Iraq War and the long, costly occupation that followed. In the American consciousness, this syndrome became a shorthand for broader anxieties: that any American use of force abroad would inevitably lead to a quagmire. But this was not the first time this syndrome had taken root.”
It added that “in the wake of the Vietnam War, the American foreign policy apparatus collapsed, and a new conventional wisdom prevailed among the elites: the war was not lost due to poor strategy or internal turmoil, but because it should never have been fought in the first place. From this conclusion sprang a broader claim—that the United States needed to fundamentally rethink its role in the world.”
This worldview, later known as the “Vietnam Syndrome,” argued that America should abandon assertive foreign policy in favor of restraint or outright withdrawal to avoid further disasters. Underlying this stance was a veiled anti-Americanism, the belief that the United States was not a force for good, but rather a force for evil on the international stage. As former Princeton professor Richard Falk put it at the time, “I like the Vietnam Syndrome because it was the right course of action for American foreign policy after the defeat in Vietnam.”
As expected, the “Iraq Syndrome” produced similar results. Under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, American withdrawal became the norm. Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan resulted in the deaths of 13 American soldiers and signaled American weakness, emboldening Russia and bolstering China’s global ambitions.
