The Diyala Water Resources Directorate revealed on Wednesday that the water level in the province’s second largest dam has risen to 30% following recent floods.
Director of Water Resources in Diyala, Muhannad al-Maamouri, told Al-Maalouma that “the water level in the Al-Adhaim Dam reservoir, in the far north of Diyala, has now risen to 30%.” He explained that “the reservoir was at zero about a month ago, but the floods at the beginning of December, followed by the recent surge, have significantly increased the water level.”
He added that “the Al-Adhaim Dam reservoir’s storage capacity, when full, exceeds 1.4 billion cubic meters, making it a vital reservoir for the Al-Adhaim River basin.” He pointed out that “it contributes to supporting the Tigris River with water during periods of drought, as the Al-Adhaim River is one of its main tributaries.”
Al-Maamouri noted that “the directorate’s staff successfully cleared the flood channels coming from Kirkuk and Salah al-Din towards the Al-Adhaim Dam reservoir without any complications,” predicting “a further increase in water levels in the coming period with the possibility of continued rainfall.”
