The General Secretariat of the Iraqi Parliament issued a statement on Sunday regarding the arrests of several members of parliament early that morning, clarifying the constitutional and legal procedures that preceded the execution of the arrest warrants.
The statement, received by Al-Maalomah News Agency, explained that “the Constitution and the Parliament’s internal regulations grant the Speaker, or his deputy in his absence, the authority to individually lift the immunity of any member of parliament wanted by the judiciary during the legislative recess, without the need for a vote.” The statement further clarified that “the order to lift immunity was officially signed within the past 48 hours, in coordination with the Supreme Judicial Council, in response to the judicial warrants issued against the members in question.”
It added that “the arrests of the members of parliament came after the completion of legal procedures and the lifting of their immunity by a decision issued by the Speaker’s office,” noting that “this was done in accordance with the established constitutional frameworks and in response to the judicial warrants.”
Security forces launched a campaign of raids and arrests targeting a number of members of parliament and politicians accused of corruption and financial and administrative misconduct. Large sums of money were seized from the homes of the accused, including MP Alia Nassif, in addition to quantities of gold jewelry.
