An informed source reported on Friday evening that the coordinating framework that brings together the Shiite forces has once again failed to decide on a candidate for the premiership, and has postponed its meeting until Saturday.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “the leaders of the Coordination Framework ended their meeting without deciding on their candidate for prime minister and without agreeing on a mechanism for selecting the candidate.”
The source pointed out that “a new meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow, Saturday, at 4 pm, to resolve the issue, preceded by side meetings for the leaders of the framework.”
It is noted that the coordinating framework that brings together the ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq announced last Wednesday evening the postponement of its meeting to decide on a candidate for the premiership until Friday.
The coordinating framework had failed to agree on a candidate for prime minister during two meetings held last Saturday and Monday.
It is noted that the government formation process has entered a critical phase, following the election of Nizar Amidi as President of the Republic, which puts the major bloc before a constitutional deadline ending on April 26 to officially present its candidate, amid fears of returning to square one of political deadlock.
In recent days, sources reported that outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani put forward the name of Ihsan al-Awadi as a candidate for the premiership, in contrast to the nomination of Bassem al-Badri by the State of Law Coalition led by Nouri al-Maliki.
