The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Adnan Faihan, confirmed on Monday evening that Parliament will work during this parliamentary session to pass the stalled laws.

In his first press conference after being elected to the position, which was attended by a correspondent from Shafaq News Agency, Faihan said: “We congratulate the Iraqi people on completing the first phase of the electoral process that took place last month, and today the first session was held and the Speaker of Parliament and his two deputies were elected.”

He added, “This achievement is the result of the great turnout for the elections, and this electoral cycle inspires hope and optimism for Iraqis. We thank the members of parliament for adhering to the constitutional timelines and holding the first session, and this is an achievement to the credit of the council.”

Faihan continued: “We pledge to the Iraqi people to exercise a purposeful oversight role and support the government program in a way that ensures the achievement of all the people’s interests, including preserving national sovereignty and political stability.”

In response to a question from a Shafaq News correspondent, Faihan affirmed: “The Iraqi people expect a lot from the House of Representatives, and we will work in this parliamentary session to pass the stalled laws.”

The Iraqi parliament elected MP Adnan Faihan this evening as the first deputy speaker of the parliament, after the election of Hebat al-Halbousi as speaker of the parliament in its sixth parliamentary session, during the first session.

MP Adnan Faihan received 177 votes compared to 107 votes for MP Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, while the number of invalid ballots reached 22.

The House of Representatives also elected, this afternoon, Hebat al-Halbousi from the Progress Party as its speaker, as he obtained 208 votes after the withdrawal of the head of the Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, from the race for the speakership, turning the competition inside the hall into a confrontation between three candidates: Hebat al-Halbousi, Salem al-Issawi, and Amer Abdul-Jabbar.

The candidate for the position, Salem Al-Issawi, received 66 votes, and MP Amer Abdul-Jabbar received 9 votes, in addition to 26 invalid ballots.

The Presidency of the House of Representatives consists of a Speaker and two Deputy Speakers, who manage the legislative sessions and organize the work of the Council. According to the political traditions followed after 2003, the position of Speaker of Parliament is allocated to the Sunni component, the First Deputy Speaker to the Shiite component, and the Second Deputy Speaker to the Kurdish component.
