The Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, discussed on Monday with the Independent High Electoral Commission the technical and legal requirements for adopting the national identity card in voting. A statement from the Security Media Cell indicated that “the Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, attended a workshop held at the headquarters of the Independent High Electoral Commission to discuss the mechanisms and requirements for adopting the national identity card in the voting process instead of the (biometric) voter card, in the presence of the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, members of the Board of Commissioners, the Director General of Civil Status, Passports and Residence, and a number of specialists and concerned parties.”
He also explained that “the workshop witnessed a presentation by the Commission on the mechanisms for implementing the directive and a discussion of the technical and procedural requirements necessary for its application in order to ensure the smooth running of the electoral process and the accuracy of voter identification procedures.”
He added, “The legal framework for adopting the national card in voting and the relevant laws supporting this trend were discussed, especially the House of Representatives Elections Law and the Provincial, District and Sub-district Councils Elections Law No. (12) of 2018, in addition to discussing the extent to which the proposed procedures are consistent with the adopted legal contexts and frameworks.”
He also stated that “the workshop came within the framework of following up on the Prime Minister’s directive to adopt the national card in the upcoming elections and to complete the necessary procedures in coordination between the Independent High Electoral Commission, the Ministry of Interior and relevant authorities.”
The participants stressed “the importance of continuing research and coordination sessions between institutions and relevant authorities during the next phase until the issue is clarified from legal, technical and practical aspects and appropriate mechanisms are reached that ensure the readiness of the concerned institutions to implement the directive in accordance with the approved procedural requirements.”
