The official spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Mahmoud Mohammed, confirmed on Saturday that his party seeks to follow an approach that prevents going towards early elections in the Kurdistan Region, stressing the need to expedite the activation of the parliament’s work and proceed with forming the new government.
The Kurdistan Region held its parliamentary elections in October 2024 after a two-year postponement, with the Kurdistan Democratic Party winning 39 seats, while its traditional rival, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, won 23 seats.
Since then, political forces have been engaged in complex negotiations to form the region’s tenth government, and as the two-year mark since the vote approaches, the parties have yet to agree on the distribution of positions and resolve contentious issues.
Mohammed told reporters that “the political developments in the Kurdistan Region necessitate reactivating the parliament’s activities as soon as possible, and taking practical steps to form the tenth government cabinet.”
The Democratic Party spokesman revealed that they are seeking to hold a meeting soon between the political bureaus of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan to discuss the crisis of the deadlock in understandings, adding: “We will not preempt events, and once the meetings are held we will be able to announce the results clearly. The table and dialogue are the only way to resolve the outstanding issues.”
Regarding the option of early elections, Mohammed explained: “If we reach a conviction that there is a practical path to holding parliamentary sessions and forming a government, then we will not need to go towards the option of early elections, and the matter will become clear in due course.”
