Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) member Mahdi Abdul Karim confirmed that his party had recently offered the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) parliamentary and sovereign ministerial positions in exchange for relinquishing the presidency.
Abdul Karim told Al-Maalouma, “The KDP has submitted proposals to resolve the presidential issue. One of these proposals stipulates granting the PUK the position of Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, as well as ministerial and sovereign posts in the federal government.”
He added, “The presidency needs to be properly activated after the passing of Jalal Talabani, as no capable and strong figure has assumed the position to manage it effectively.”
He explained that “the presidency needs a competent figure capable of resolving the problems between the central government and the Kurdistan Region, and managing the position properly. This is what is being worked on through dialogues and understandings with the PUK.”
