On Thursday, Wafa Muhammad Karim, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, explained the nature of the obstacles that stand in the way of enacting the oil and gas law, noting that these obstacles represent the core of the dispute between Baghdad and Erbil.
Karim told Al-Maalomah, “There are factors and new developments that represent a gateway to proceeding with the legislation of the oil and gas law, but there are still clauses that must be agreed upon in the legislation, despite the trend towards passing this law.”
He added, “The details of the aforementioned law contain ambiguities, which necessitates finding solutions and understandings on some points and clauses within the law before proceeding with the legislative process and its approval in Parliament.”
He explained that “there are details related to oil fields, both old and new, the powers of the region, the file of oil contracts and operating companies, and other clauses that must be resolved within the law, as they will represent a point of contention between Baghdad and Erbil before the law is finalized and proceeded towards its enactment.”
