The sources said that “the Speaker of Parliament agreed with the heads of the parliamentary blocs, during a meeting held in the Parliament building, to set next Thursday as the final date for holding a session to elect the President of the Republic.”

She added that “those gathered stressed the need to intensify consultations and political dialogues during the next few days, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive political consensus that ensures the session is held with a legal quorum, and puts an end to the state of vacancy in the position of President of the Republic.”

The sources indicated that “the Speaker of Parliament stressed the importance of all parliamentary blocs assuming their national and constitutional responsibilities and actively participating in the upcoming session,” explaining that “any disruption or absence from the session will be considered a breach of constitutional duty at this sensitive stage.”

She added that “the agreement included keeping the door open for dialogue between the political forces, and working to overcome the obstacles of disagreement, in order to create a positive atmosphere that helps in electing a president of the republic who enjoys broad national acceptance.”

Earlier on Sunday (February 1, 2026), the Speaker of Parliament held a meeting with the heads of parliamentary blocs to discuss finalizing the election of the President of the Republic.

The media office of the House of Representatives stated in a statement received by “Baghdad Today” that “the Presidency of the House of Representatives held a meeting today with the heads of the parliamentary blocs to discuss the resolution of the election of the President of the Republic, and to emphasize setting a final date for the election.”

He explained that “the Council Presidency stressed the importance of adhering to constitutional timelines.”

Earlier, the Speaker of Parliament decided to postpone today’s session, which was scheduled to elect the President of the Republic.
