Political warnings are escalating in Iraq about a “behind-the-scenes” movement led by influential parties to re-engineer the political landscape, through meetings held outside the usual official and diplomatic frameworks.
The warnings indicate that the meetings brought together local leaders with regional and international political and intelligence figures, and their main objective is to redistribute decision-making centers in the country and change the rules of the game.
Observers of Iraqi affairs believe that these moves to alter the balance of power constitute a “ticking time bomb” that could shatter a fragile political stability. Tampering with the current power dynamics represents a blatant violation of the governing agreements that led to the formation of the current government, threatening to unleash political conflicts.
These shocking leaks come at a time when political parties are talking about attempts to create tensions within the coordination framework, in preparation for dismantling it and pulling the rug out from under the prime minister.
In this context, Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leader in the State of Law Coalition, revealed in a statement to Al-Maalomah that “some political entities aspire to have the position of Prime Minister allocated to them, and are working to change the features of the political map by enlisting the help of external parties to achieve this goal.”
Jaafar said that “there are political parties moving to redraw the political landscape in a way that serves their interests,” noting that “these efforts are being carried out through coordination and dealings with external parties, with the aim of changing the existing political equation and reaching the premiership.” He explained that “the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, feels that there are attempts targeting the coordination framework and working to redraw the political map in the future, leading to the transfer of the premiership to another component,” pointing out that “there are international and regional parties seeking to achieve this direction.”
For his part, the spokesman for the State of Law Coalition, Aqeel al-Rudaini, confirmed in a statement to Al-Maalouma that “the leaders of the coordination framework will hold an anticipated meeting to discuss a number of political and governmental files, foremost among them the completion of the cabinet and the anticipated visit of Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi to the American capital, Washington.”
Al-Rudaini said that “the meeting will also address the latest developments in the anti-corruption file, in addition to discussing mechanisms for completing the ministerial formation.” He added that “the agreement on completing the ministerial cabinet will be postponed until after the Prime Minister’s visit to the United States concludes,” noting that “the leaders of the framework will also continue to discuss the file of appointing deputy prime ministers, in preparation for taking a final position on it.”
For some time now, certain political entities have been attempting to impose foreign agendas on the Iraqi political scene, particularly after being accused of involvement in numerous espionage operations with regional countries. These moves threaten to destabilize the country and plunge it into a cycle of crises from which it will be difficult to escape, effectively returning it to square one—one of the agendas these entities are trying to implement in Iraq.
