The American website Axios revealed the behind-the-scenes details of US President Donald Trump’s decision to import urgent shipments of Russian diesel, attributing the move to Ukraine’s disregard for Washington’s demands to stop targeting Russian oil refineries.

The website quoted a US official as saying that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “is not reading the political climate correctly,” arguing that the continued attacks on Russian refineries undermine the goodwill that Zelensky has built with Trump over the past six months.

The official added that Trump wanted Ukraine to stop unilaterally targeting Russian refineries, because these strikes contribute to higher gasoline prices in the United States, noting that the US president does not see the Ukrainian attacks on refineries as equivalent to the Russian strikes targeting the electricity sector in Ukraine.

The official said: “The attacks on the refineries cause pain for Russia, but they also cause pain for the United States.”

According to Axios, the US side informed the Ukrainian negotiating team, during eight hours of talks in Miami on Friday, that Trump had decided to proceed with importing Russian diesel, after Kyiv ignored repeated US requests to stop targeting Russian oil refineries in attacks that the official said directly affect US consumers.

In this context, Trump announced that he had a telephone conversation, which he described as “very successful,” with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which he said resulted in an agreement to urgently supply shipments of Russian diesel.

Trump explained that the agreement includes the supply of 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global market, and another 500,000 tons during next November, followed by an additional shipment of one million tons.
