Mazen Alloush, Director of Relations at the General Authority for Ports and Customs in Syria, confirmed on Thursday that the port of Tartous received a ship coming from Romania loaded with a shipment of timber, which is the first international transit convoy heading overland to Iraq through Syrian territory in 14 years.
Alloush explained in a statement to the Syrian News Agency (SANA) that the shipment arrived at the port and that unloading and handling operations were immediately initiated by technical workshops and specialized personnel at an accelerated pace, with the aim of ensuring the smooth transport of goods by land to their final destination according to the highest approved logistical standards.
He pointed out that the passage of this shipment through Syrian territory constitutes a qualitative step towards restoring the country’s role as a vital center and main corridor for regional transport and trade, and reflects clear indicators of the recovery of international transport and supply chains after years of disruption.
On the 12th of this month, the port received two transit ships coming from Romania carrying about 32,000 heads of sheep and calves to Jordan as part of the transit movement through Syrian territory.
