On Saturday, the joint committees in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate announced the implementation of a large-scale monitoring campaign to inspect food warehouses in the city’s industrial area, with the aim of monitoring prices and ensuring the quality of food and goods offered in the markets.
The head of the joint committees, Baban Ahmed, told a Shafaq News Agency correspondent that the federal government’s recent decision to raise the dollar exchange rate has raised concerns among a segment of citizens about the possibility of rising prices for goods and daily necessities.
Ahmed stressed that the committees continue to monitor the markets and will not allow traders or shop owners to raise prices on citizens, noting the continuation of inspection visits to warehouses and commercial markets to ensure price stability and prevent any violations.
At a press conference, Baban Ahmed stressed that the committees would not tolerate any violations, saying: “We assure citizens that we will not allow any kind of abuse, and that any merchant who raises prices on citizens will face severe legal penalties.”
The Iraqi government’s decision to adjust the official exchange rate of the dollar from 1,320 dinars to 1,500 dinars has sparked widespread concern throughout Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, amid fears of its impact on the prices of basic goods and materials, given that local markets rely on importing a large percentage of their needs from abroad in dollars.
