On Sunday, the outgoing Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, directed a special meeting to follow up on the Basra-Haditha multi-directional oil pipeline project, stressing the importance of implementing the strategic pipeline.
According to a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, the Ministers of Oil and Industry and Minerals presented a detailed explanation of the project and the points of delay it faced during the past stage, the mechanisms for addressing and accelerating the pace of work, as well as a presentation of the procedures for following up on the first implementation contracts signed on (August 11, 2024) between the Basra Oil Company and the Oil Projects Company in the Ministry of Oil, and the second signed on (January 7, 2025) between the Oil Projects Company and the General Company for Iron and Steel in the Ministry of Industry and Minerals.
Al-Sudani pointed out that “the Basra-Haditha pipeline project will ensure flexibility in transporting crude oil towards the Turkish port of Ceyhan, and the ports of Banias and Aqaba, as well as providing flexibility to supply the refineries in the central and northern regions and increase their production capacities in various circumstances.”
He also stressed that “when the project was proposed, it represented a proactive anticipation of the current regional conditions, and a preemptive measure against the possibility of disruption to current export routes, in addition to its importance in sustaining Iraq’s oil wealth, preserving energy sources, and the momentum of the national economic development process.”
Al-Sudani directed the formation of a special body to implement the project, headed by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil, and including the relevant advisors to the Prime Minister and the relevant Directors General in the Ministries of Oil and Industry and Minerals.
The statement added that “the meeting discussed the technical details of the important strategic project, and the project was approved to finance it by allocating $1.5 billion during the current year, financed under the Iraqi-Chinese agreement, noting that the total estimated cost of the project reaches $5 billion.”
