A parliamentary source revealed on Wednesday a political movement led by prominent Shiite and Sunni figures aimed at undermining the influence of Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, by obstructing the approval of his nominees for the Interior and Higher Education ministries.
The source told the Information Agency that “political entities (Shiite and Sunni) are working systematically to weaken al-Maliki politically, as they see his presence and political stature as a real obstacle to their emergence as alternative leaders on the scene.” The source added that “these parties have clearly circumvented the political agreements regarding the formation of the cabinet and deliberately created confusion within the parliament to delay the vote on the State of Law nominees for the Interior and Higher Education ministries.”
The source affirmed that “all these attempts and plans aimed at besieging al-Maliki’s coalition are doomed to failure, and the approval of the nominees for the two ministries will be achieved sooner or later.”
