TankerTrackers, a website specializing in tracking tankers, revealed on Sunday that tankers carrying two million barrels of Iraqi oil and another four million barrels of Saudi oil had crossed the Strait of Hormuz towards global markets.
Bloomberg observed three giant oil tankers carrying Saudi and Iraqi crude leaving the Gulf through the Strait on Saturday morning, indicating a “significant” increase in oil flows from the Middle East coinciding with a decrease in military tensions.
This maritime movement comes after statements by US President Donald Trump, in which he confirmed that a breakthrough in the energy sector is “imminent” with the reopening of the Strait, following the announcement of a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran for two weeks in preparation for a lasting peace, after a military conflict that lasted nearly 40 days.
Shipping data indicates that traffic is gradually regaining momentum; the first two days of the “truce” saw only about 12 ships pass through, before the numbers jumped to their current levels as confidence returned to global supply chains.
