Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slowed sharply on Monday after Iran announced it was closing the waterway again, while shipping data showed Iraqi oil tankers were among the vessels that left the strait before the new restrictions were tightened.
According to data from Kpler, only five ships have crossed the strait since Sunday, compared to 26 the previous day, including three supertankers carrying about two million barrels each of Saudi crude oil and fuel oil.
The data showed that among the ships that left the strait on Saturday were three giant oil tankers loaded with crude oil from Iraq, the UAE and Kuwait, along with three other tankers carrying various petroleum products, while 13 ships entered the strait on the same day, including two giant tankers.
Iran had lifted the de facto blockade of the strait last week after agreeing with the United States to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, before the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Saturday that it was closing the waterway again in response to Israeli strikes in Lebanon, while the US military confirmed that commercial ships continued to operate.
