Former Member of Parliament Abbas Sarout confirmed on Friday that postponing the April 11th session, scheduled for the election of the President of the Republic, is a possibility, given the lack of a complete political consensus thus far.
Sarout told Al-Maalouma that “the political understandings announced a few days ago regarding setting the April 11th session as the date for the election of the President of the Republic by Parliament have not yet reached the stage of complete political consensus,” noting that “postponing the session remains a possibility.”
He added that “next week will witness important meetings that may lead to a specific agreement that resolves this issue and gives the green light to proceed with finalizing this constitutional entitlement,” indicating that “the next step will be to move to the final stage, which is tasking the candidate of the largest bloc with forming the government.”
Sarout explained that “the ball is now in the court of the Kurdish forces, as they are the ones responsible for determining the identity of the candidate for the position of President of the Republic,” indicating that “the coming days may witness changes that lead to resolving this matter.”
