MP Ahmed Al-Asadi, from the Sadiqun parliamentary bloc, warned on Monday of the danger of leniency in the file of holding corrupt individuals accountable, stressing the need to take firm measures against those involved in corruption cases and not to repeat past experiences.
Al-Asadi told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “leniency in holding corrupt individuals accountable poses a danger to the state and its institutions, and this issue must be dealt with seriously and firmly.” He explained that the judiciary is working to ensure that those involved in corruption cases are not shown leniency and will be held accountable according to the law.
He added that “the Parliament will work in the coming period to monitor the government’s performance in combating corruption and to oversee the procedures taken against corrupt individuals, ensuring that past experiences of leniency in dealing with this issue are not repeated.”
Al-Asadi indicated that “the next phase will be different from the past in the fight against corruption, and there will be no room for leniency or overlooking corruption cases,” emphasizing the necessity of “integrating efforts between the legislative, executive, and judicial authorities to confront this scourge and protect public funds.”
Earlier, a number of MPs warned against repeating past experiences in dealing with corruption cases, especially those that sparked widespread controversy regarding the accused, stressing the importance of resolving cases according to legal procedures and not allowing any accused person to escape accountability.
This comes in conjunction with the arrest of former MP and head of the National Masses Party, Ahmed al-Jubouri, known as Abu Mazen was summoned to Baghdad in connection with corruption cases, a move that has brought the issue of holding those accused of corruption accountable back to the forefront of political and media attention.
