The Parliamentary Communications and Media Committee confirmed, on Friday, that establishing a national telecommunications company requires a will, while indicating that this would end the telephone companies ’monopoly on the telecommunications sector.
A member of the committee, Alaa al-Rubaie, said, according to the official agency, that “the government has the ability to establish a national telecommunications company, given that the infrastructure used by mobile phone companies belongs to the state and the Ministry of Communications,” pointing out that “the establishment of this company requires the will of the government.”
Al-Rubaie added that “the House of Representatives issued a decision obliging the federal government to work to establish the National Company to work alongside companies investing in the telecommunications sector, and to be competitive in order to reduce costs, improve quality and other other areas.”
He pointed out that “the establishment of the National Company will end the monopoly of telecommunications companies in this sector,” indicating that ”
The House of Representatives voted last September on the form of a resolution obligating the government to establish a national joint stock company for telecommunications to open competition and maximize financial revenues for the annual federal budget.
