The Wall Street Journal, citing informed sources, revealed that the United States has informed Gulf states of the need to prepare for a short and intensive military campaign against Iran, amid American and Israeli military moves aimed at weakening Tehran and pushing it back to the negotiating table.
According to the newspaper, these contacts came through diplomatic and military channels, amid preparations that include the transfer of air defense systems, the restocking of ammunition, and the equipping of bombers and fighters, as well as moves to strengthen the American naval presence in the Middle East region.
The information in the report indicates that preparations include transferring the Patriot system from Texas to the region, along with the addition of an aircraft carrier strike group and Marine Corps units to the US forces in the Middle East during the next month.
This comes at a time when US President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision on launching a new attack, amid talk of military options that could target Iranian infrastructure and nuclear facilities, in a shift from the path of economic pressure and naval blockade.
On the other hand, analysts warn that military strikes may not bring down the Iranian regime, but may push it towards further extremism, pointing to Tehran’s stockpile of ballistic missiles and its ability to rebuild its military capabilities.
Iran warned that any new attack would be met with a response targeting interests and objectives in the region, raising concerns among Gulf states about a wider confrontation, at a time when they are seeking to strengthen their missile defenses in anticipation of any escalation.
Diplomatically, regional efforts to revive talks and avoid a new confrontation are continuing, but have not yet achieved a breakthrough, amid disagreements over the scope of negotiations; Washington is focusing on the nuclear issue, while Tehran is sticking to its demands and conditions.
Analysts believe that Trump may seek, through any potential military action, to achieve political gains that would later allow him to reduce American involvement in the region. However, the timing or scale of any attack remains uncertain, according to the data in the report.
