On Sunday, Qubad Talabani, a leader in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), reiterated his party’s position supporting the swift formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government, emphasizing support for any initiative or decision that would bring the region out of the political deadlock.
This came in a statement he made to journalists on the sidelines of his visit to the administration of the independent “Raparin” region, in which he was asked about the possibility of holding a meeting between the two main parties in the region, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union, during the coming period. Talabani replied, “We are ready for such meetings, but the new regional government must be formed before that.” He added, “But the problem is not with the meeting between the two sides, but rather with the extent of their understanding that the next regional government, in order to succeed, needs to implement these principles of genuine partnership, maintaining balance, coexistence, acceptance of others, and joint action.”
Regarding what is being circulated among political and popular circles about the disputes over the distribution of executive positions, Talabani said that the problem does not lie in the distribution of positions, but rather it is rooted in the failure to implement those principles mentioned.
This comes in conjunction with what the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Pishtiwan Sadiq, announced last Wednesday, that the party – in response to the call made by the Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani – will resume talks with the Kurdish political forces and parties with the aim of reaching a settlement to the political deadlock in the Kurdistan Region and proceeding with the formation of the new government, despite the fact that nearly two years have passed since the legislative elections were held in the region.
Last Tuesday, Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani invited political forces in the Kurdistan Region to hold a meeting after Eid al-Adha to address the deadlock and end the “tense” political situation.
