Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi decided on Saturday to appoint former National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji as his special security advisor.

This decision comes directly after Al-Zaydi oversaw the handover ceremony at the National Security Advisory building between the new advisor, Qasim Hassan Al-Aboudi, and his predecessor, Al-Araji.

This move comes as part of a series of sweeping changes made by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to senior political and security positions since he took office last May, with the aim of restructuring vital state institutions and activating oversight and security agencies in accordance with his ministerial program.

Since assuming the premiership, Al-Zaydi has issued a series of decisions to assign security, advisory, and director-general positions to new blood, in order to consolidate his plans related to economic reform, combating corruption, rebuilding the financial system, as well as strengthening coordination between intelligence agencies to ensure internal stability and attract foreign investments.
