Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf will head to Iraq on Wednesday, leading a high-level parliamentary delegation. The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that “Qalibaf’s visit to Iraq aims to discuss regional developments and strengthen strategic cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad, as well as explore joint solutions to contribute to establishing stability and security in the West Asia region.”
She added that “the visit will include meetings with senior officials and a number of prominent figures in the country,” noting that “the talks will address ways to strengthen bilateral relations, border security, combating terrorism, developing economic cooperation, in addition to following up on the implementation of joint agreements between the two countries.”
She also noted that “the visit comes within the framework of strengthening coordination and cooperation between Iraq and Iran on issues of common interest and regional developments.” This visit also comes amid the confusion caused by the targeting of the headquarters of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, by two drones. The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service stated yesterday in a statement that “according to information from the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service, two drones of the Heedid-110 type targeted the private office of the Prime Minister of the Regional Government and the residence of the Director of the Security Service.”
He added that “the planes took off from the direction of Iran and targeted the Pirmam district (formerly Salah al-Din resort), located 30 km north of Erbil,” noting that “no human casualties were recorded.”
In contrast, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein asked his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, yesterday to clarify the official Iranian position on the attack on Barzani’s headquarters in Erbil. A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein made a telephone call to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to discuss the attack that targeted the residence of Masrour Barzani, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and his personal office, by Heidel-110 drones.”
Hussein stressed, according to the statement, that “previous attacks were justified by the Iranian government by the presence of Iranian opposition parties or factions in the region, but the latest attack directly targeted the headquarters of the head of the regional government, which makes it a dangerous precedent that will increase tension and threaten stability in the region.”
For his part, the Iranian Foreign Minister expressed his “surprise at the occurrence of such an attack,” explaining that “he has no information indicating that the attacks were launched from Iranian territory,” and stressing “there is no justification for such actions, given the positive and strong relations that bind the Iranian government to the Kurdistan Regional Government, especially with the two main parties in the region.”
