On Wednesday, President Nizar Amidi discussed with Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf the latest regional and international developments, prospects for bilateral relations, and ways to develop them. Meanwhile, during a separate meeting with Qalibaf, Speaker of Parliament Hebat al-Halbousi called for consideration of Iraq’s “special circumstances” in exporting oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
A statement from the media office of the Presidency of the Republic, received by Shafaq News Agency, stated that the meeting addressed the latest developments on the regional and international scenes, as well as the prospects for bilateral relations and ways to develop them in a manner that serves the common interests of the two peoples and the general good of the region.
According to the statement, the President affirmed Iraq’s firm and supportive stance towards all efforts to end conflicts and resolve crises in the region, noting the need to adopt the option of constructive dialogue and diplomatic paths to address outstanding issues and establish the foundations of security, development and lasting stability.
He added that Iraq clearly stands by any measures that contribute to strengthening regional peace and preserving the sovereignty and independence of states, stressing the importance of prioritizing wisdom and peaceful solutions in settling disputes, avoiding escalation and tension, and refraining from the use of force, given the serious repercussions this has on security and peace.
For his part, Qalibaf expressed his country’s appreciation and pride in the deep historical relations between the two peoples and neighboring countries, stressing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s keenness on coordination and joint cooperation with Iraq in various fields.
In a separate meeting, Halbousi and Qalibaf discussed bilateral relations and ways to develop cooperation between the two countries, particularly at the parliamentary level.
Al-Halbousi pointed to the importance of activating friendship committees, strengthening parliamentary diplomacy, and expanding areas of cooperation in a way that serves the interests of both peoples, adding that Iraq is one of the countries most affected by the conditions and developments taking place in the region.
The Speaker of Parliament called for consideration of the nature of the relations between Iraq and Iran, and for Iraq to have “special status” regarding oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz in a way that preserves its economic interests.
For his part, Qalibaf pointed out his country’s keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, especially trade and economic, and to activate parliamentary friendship committees and follow up on the implementation of agreements signed between the two countries in a way that contributes to developing relations and serving common interests.
