Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stressed on Friday that developing economic and trade relations between Iran and Iraq requires a “precise roadmap,” calling for abandoning American hegemony through exchange in national currencies.
This came during his speech at the consultative meeting of Iranian and Iraqi economic activists, which was held at the Iranian embassy in Baghdad, according to the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
Qalibaf pointed to the pivotal importance of the private sector, considering that some of the obstacles it faces have become “deeply rooted” in both countries, revealing a plan to hold an expanded meeting in Tehran with the participation of officials from the Iranian Chamber of Commerce to address these problems according to a practical priority schedule.
Qalibaf stressed the need to end dependence on the US dollar and adopt local currencies in trade exchanges, adding: “The era of American hegemony over the world is over, but we have not taken advantage of the available opportunities as required and we are still practicing trade in old ways.”
Qalibaf also touched on the geopolitical importance of the region, noting that the route extending from Iran and Iraq to the Mediterranean Sea through the countries of the axis of resistance represents “the heart of the geopolitical field and a key component of power and independence,” reiterating the importance of utilizing the sea outlets and competent human resources in the border areas between Iraq and Iran.
