Political analyst Sabah al-Akeeli asserted on Thursday that comprehensive security and stability for Iraq’s sovereignty will not be complete until the issue of all forms of foreign presence within Iraqi territory is resolved. This includes the Turkish forces, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and the Iranian opposition. He emphasized that the withdrawal of the US-led international coalition forces is insufficient to declare full sovereignty.
Al-Akeeli told the Information Agency, “Iraq’s security and sovereignty are a pressing popular and political demand that must be realized on the ground.” He pointed out that “the concept of sovereignty will remain fragmented until the issue of the Turkish forces’ presence is resolved and they withdraw completely from northern Iraq, without granting Ankara any privileges to maintain a presence deep within Iraqi territory, regardless of the distance.”
He added, “Closing this issue also requires ending the presence of the PKK, which opposes Ankara, so that it does not become a pretext for Turkish incursions. Furthermore, it necessitates the expulsion of Iranian opposition factions that exploit Iraqi territory as a base to target neighboring Iran.”
Al-Akeeli explained that “these demands fall within the vision and demands of the Iraqi resistance factions, and they are genuine and legitimate demands,” calling on the government to “commit to ending any foreign presence, as it constitutes a real threat to the country’s security and sovereignty, and to ensure that Iraq does not become a launching pad for threatening neighboring countries.”
These statements coincide with the position announced by the official spokesman for the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (Kataib Hezbollah), Jaafar al-Husseini, in which he affirmed that “the resistance is not bound” by any timetable or agreement issued by any governmental or political party that does not guarantee full sovereignty. He indicated that organizing the resistance’s weapons is contingent upon achieving the withdrawal of American and NATO forces and all forms of foreign military presence (on land, in the air, and at sea), while reserving the right to respond directly to any American or Zionist violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.
