Nizar Haidar, director of the Iraqi Media Center in Washington, revealed on Thursday that understandings have been reached regarding sovereign portfolios within the negotiations to form the new government. He indicated that the administration of US President Donald Trump informed Prime Minister-designate Ali al-Zaidi that it would not interfere in the selection of individuals to fill five sovereign ministries and institutions.
Haidar told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “The US administration informed al-Zaidi that it would not interfere in the selection of the Ministers of Interior and Defense, in addition to some security institutions, as well as the Ministries of Finance and Oil and the Central Bank.” He explained that “these matters are subject to political and security understandings related to the relationship with Washington.”
He added that “the United States may use its political influence against some figures who oppose its policies,” noting that “there are reports of a possible postponement of the vote on some sovereign positions until political agreements are finalized.”
He pointed out that “Washington has expressed its readiness to support the new government both domestically and internationally if it adheres to the proposed understandings.”
