Political researcher Qasim Balshan confirmed today that the Iraqi political arena should not remain subject to the influence of external statements or tweets, stressing that the process of choosing the prime minister should be decided according to constitutional frameworks and internal understandings, not international pressures.

Balshan told Al-Maalomah News Agency that Iraq “is not obligated to respond to any position issued through social media,” explaining that the talk circulating about external objections to the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki is not based on official communications or declared diplomatic positions so far.

He added that “withdrawing al-Maliki’s nomination – if it happens – could be interpreted politically as yielding to pressure, which might encourage international parties to raise the bar for their demands in the future,” noting that “political balance requires adherence to the independent national decision and not opening the door to precedents that affect sovereignty.”

He pointed out that “the Coordination Framework has not issued any official statement announcing a change in the name of its candidate for the premiership, and that everything being circulated is still within the realm of media analyses and political predictions.”

This controversy comes at a time when political consultations are intensifying to resolve the issue of the prime ministership, amid anticipation of the major blocs’ positions and whether they will adhere to their current candidate or move towards a compromise that ends the dispute.
