Political activity intensifies to decide the presidency... a security imperative to confront the repercussions of regional escalationInformation/Report…
Iraq faces a dual challenge: a state of internal political deadlock and the serious security tensions plaguing the region. This has prompted political forces to intensify their efforts to fulfill constitutional requirements and protect the country from the repercussions of external conflicts.
The need for security and national responsibility
was highlighted by MP Hamid Abbas, who revealed intensive meetings being held by the Coordination Framework forces to urge Kurdish parties to end the political impasse. He warned that disagreements over the presidency have stalled constitutional processes.
In an interview with Al-Maalouma, Abbas emphasized that “the current phase, with its regional chaos and tensions resulting from the aggression against Iran, demands the highest degree of responsibility from Iraqi political forces to overcome their differences.”
He added that “expediting the formation of a government has become an urgent necessity to protect the country from the serious security repercussions surrounding the region,” stressing that “the continued political deadlock exposes Iraq to significant risks with unpredictable consequences amidst the ongoing military escalation.”
Warnings Against Bypassing Agreements
: In a related context, warnings emerged that rushing into solutions without consensus could lead to counterproductive results. MP Bahaa al-Din al-Nouri cautioned against proceeding with the selection of the president without a prior agreement among Kurdish forces.
In a statement to Al-Maalomah, al-Nouri said, “Attempting to circumvent Kurdish agreements and proceed directly to Parliament to elect the president could deepen the divisions within the political landscape.” He explained that “the Kurdish political bloc must finalize its choices before entering the voting session.”
He emphasized that “bypassing these understandings will ultimately lead to a political deadlock that will hinder the completion of other constitutional requirements,” calling for “resorting to dialogue and agreement to ensure the stability of the political process and avoid repeating past crisis scenarios.”
Between the pressure of external events, represented by the aggression against neighboring Iran and the resulting need for a strong government, and the complexities of internal Kurdish consensus, the coming days appear crucial in determining the ability of political forces to prioritize the supreme national interest and overcome the crisis, thus sparing Iraq the dangers of sliding into regional chaos.
