The head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Bafel Talabani, affirmed on Saturday that the tensions in the region have harmed Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, stressing that any peace agreement and understanding between America and Iran is in the interest of Sulaymaniyah and the entire region.
Talabani said in a speech on the sidelines of his participation in a special dialogue session on the sidelines of the Delphi International Economic Forum that “the region and all of Iraq have good relations with Iran, Turkey and America,” adding that “despite the weakening of Iran, the cohesion among its people has become stronger,” in reference to the fact that the regime in Tehran has not fallen as a result of the pressures exerted against it by Washington.
He stressed the need for Iraq to play a role in maintaining the balance between Iran and America, and to avoid being drawn into any regional conflict, whether present or future.
Regarding relations between Erbil and Baghdad, the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan stressed the need to build trust between the two sides, noting that this only requires truth and sincerity in work, explaining, “We need a new political direction between Baghdad and Erbil.”
Regarding the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government, despite this file being stalled for two years after the last legislative elections in the region, Talabani said, “A government similar to the current one should not be formed in the Kurdistan Region, and this is not just my opinion, but the opinion of most citizens.” He added, “We want to form a government that respects partnership, balance, and understanding, understands the demands of the Kurdish people, and works to improve relations between Erbil and Baghdad.”
