On Monday, MP Sarwa Mohammed of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) confirmed that the PUK’s sole candidate for the presidency is Nizar Amidi, and that there is no other candidate within the PUK to assume this position.
Mohammed told Shafaq News Agency that “the Patriotic Union has begun negotiations with the Kurdistan Democratic Party to discuss political entitlements, foremost among them the issue of electing the President of the Republic, in accordance with the specified constitutional deadlines.”
She added that “the head of the Union, Pavel Talabani, visited the capital, Baghdad, and met with a number of Shiite and Sunni political leaders, with the aim of obtaining political support for the election of his candidate for the presidency of the republic.
Mohammed pointed out that the Speaker of Parliament has not yet set a date for holding a session to elect the President of the Republic, noting that the remaining period of constitutional deadlines does not exceed 15 days, and the election session is expected to be held at the end of this month.
Delegations from the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan held a meeting in Erbil to discuss a number of political issues, most notably the position of President of the Republic.
Last week, a source in the Kurdistan Democratic Party told Shafaq News Agency that the party’s political bureau, headed by Masoud Barzani, decided to form a high-level delegation to begin formal negotiations with political forces regarding the position of President of the Republic of Iraq, following a meeting that discussed the presidential entitlement without deciding on the name of the candidate.
