Parliamentary source - Parliament will decide the position of President of the Republic by voteInformation / Baghdad –
An informed parliamentary source revealed on Thursday that the session scheduled for next week will decide the presidential election if the political forces fail to reach a consensus candidate. The source confirmed that members of parliament will be forced to vote directly to choose the president.
Speaking to the Information Agency, the source said, “The insistence of the two Kurdish parties on their respective candidates, Fuad Hussein and Nizar Amidi, will lead to the first round of voting ending without either securing the constitutionally required two-thirds majority.” The source added, “This scenario will compel parliament to proceed to a second round of voting.” The source
further explained that “the second round will be decided by a simple majority (half plus one), meaning the candidate receiving the most votes will be declared the winner of the presidency.” The source emphasized that “this option will place a significant responsibility on the political forces to resolve this constitutional entitlement without further obstruction.”
The source indicated that “the next stage requires broad political consensus to avoid division, but if the dispute persists, Parliament will use its constitutional powers to resolve the matter through a direct vote,” stressing that “the upcoming session will be pivotal in determining the course of the political process and the formation of the new government.”
