Political analyst Jassim Al-Moussawi confirmed today, Thursday, that the presence of a parliamentary opposition under the dome of parliament represents a “very healthy situation” for the political process, noting that previous experiences revealed the absence of a real and constructive opposition throughout the period of successive governments.
Al-Moussawi told Al-Maalouma that “the nature of the Iraqi parliament is based on understandings between political forces, which determine the selection of the three presidencies by consensus and mutual interests,” explaining that “on this basis, the emergence of any parliamentary opposition reflects the keenness of the bloc that adopts it to work seriously within the parliament.”
Al-Moussawi added that “no government can succeed unless there is an opposition to counter it,” stressing the need for the tools of this opposition to be effective and strong in order to enable it to prevent the government from slipping into the brink of financial and administrative corruption.
He added, “Having an opposition, even if it’s just one person, is far better than having none,” emphasizing that “the presence of an opposition at this stage is of paramount importance for evaluating government performance.”
