Information / Interview..
At a pivotal political moment for Iraq, and while the situation is boiling under the hot plate of “deadlock”, this frank dialogue opens doors that were closed to the backstage of the conflict within the corridors of the House of Representatives and the coordination framework, as the scene does not stop at the limits of competition over the “sovereign” committees that have become a stage for digital and oversight conflict, but extends to reach the peak of parliamentary escalation by collecting official signatures to expel foreign forces and close the American embassy, in response to repeated violations of sovereignty.
In this interview, conducted by Al-Maalomah News Agency with MP Ahmed Shaheed, we reveal the roadmap for a “third term” and the difficult conditions set by Nouri al-Maliki for relinquishing power. This comes in response to the movement of the Rejection Front, which includes more than 100 MPs who oppose renewing Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s term, warning of “economic collapse” and further bloodshed. Amidst the security threats emanating from across the Syrian border and the ongoing deadlock over the selection of the president, we present to you the details of the “conspiracies” and alliances that will shape the features of the next phase in the face of the “humming of warplanes” and the ambitions of those in power.
Q: Why haven’t some sovereign committees reached a decision yet?
A/ Yes, there are sovereign committees (A) and others (B) that have not been clearly decided, most notably the Integrity, Oil and Energy, Security and Defense, Agriculture and Martyrs, due to the supervisory weight they carry and their direct impact on the political scene in the next stage. The Integrity, Security and Defense, and Oil and Energy committees are among the most prominent committees that witness political competition, given their importance and influential role in monitoring and following up on strategic files.”
Q: Have you started collecting parliamentary signatures to close the American embassy in Baghdad?
A: Yes, we have started collecting signatures from the honorable and gentlemen members of parliament in order to close the American embassy in Baghdad, as well as to expel all foreign forces from the country, against the backdrop of the repeated Zionist-American attacks on the security forces and the Popular Mobilization Forces. There is a move towards legislating a law obligating the government not to conclude any agreements with any foreign or American forces without the approval of the House of Representatives.
Q: Where has the political power struggle reached in the government formation crisis?
A: The government formation process is contingent on the vote for the presidency. The Kurdish forces’ failure to agree on a consensus candidate for the presidency deepens the government formation crisis. There is parliamentary pressure on the political forces to expedite the government formation process. If the situation remains as it is, Parliament has no option but to resort to a national process to choose one of the candidates for the presidency.
Q: What is the truth about Maliki’s withdrawal and the appointment of Sudani for a second term?
A: Yes, the political deadlock over the position of Prime Minister was discussed a few days ago with the candidate for this position, Mr. Nouri al-Maliki, and he expressed his willingness to step down on the condition that no former Prime Minister is nominated. There is a division among the political forces regarding the names proposed to assume this position.
Q: Is there a campaign to collect parliamentary signatures to reject al-Sudani’s appointment for a second term?
A: There are more than 100 MPs who signed a rejection of renewing the appointment of the outgoing Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, for a second term for several reasons, including the economic and security collapse, and the disregard for the blood and rights of the martyrs of the Popular Mobilization Forces.
Q: What is the role of the government and parliament in preserving national sovereignty from Zionist-American violations?
A: Iraq’s sovereignty is a red line and cannot be crossed or violated under any circumstances. The House of Representatives previously discussed the violations and infringements that affect Iraqi sovereignty, and we came out with several recommendations, including taking strong and deterrent measures through the UN Security Council and the United Nations against anyone who infringes on Iraqi sovereignty.
Q: There are warnings about suspicious American moves in cooperation with terrorist groups in Syria?
A: We have warned against the consequences of the suspicious moves led by Washington, aimed at creating strife through terrorist cells. The recent handover of 5,000 terrorists to Iraq, most of them from foreign countries, is a ticking time bomb.
