A member of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee revealed the amounts recovered from the case of tax deposits at Rafidain Bank, known in the media as the “theft of the century.”
Ali Turki told Al Furat News Agency: “The money recovered from the ‘theft of the century’ does not exceed 5% of the real value of the money.”
He explained that “official documents indicated the existence of approximately 176 million dollars, or 250 billion dinars, which is a small number compared to the actual stolen number of 4,700 billion dinars {4.7 trillion dinars}, which was announced earlier, or more than 4 trillion dinars.”
He pointed out that “the recovered numbers are very small and do not exceed 5% of the real value of the money.”
In 2022, it was announced that more than 3 trillion Iraqi dinars ($2.5 billion) had been lost from tax deposits, through a coalition of 5 oil companies using fictitious bonds.
Following this, an order was issued to summon officials close to former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, including Finance Minister Ali Allawi, the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, Raed Juhi, and others.
On October 24, 2022, Nour Zuhair was arrested, as he heads the board of directors of one of the companies involved in the case, and was later released on bail, after Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced the recovery of 5% of the amount, in exchange for Nour Zuhair’s pledge to hand over all the stolen amounts within days.
On November 25, 2024, the Baghdad/Karkh Anti-Corruption Criminal Court issued a 10-year prison sentence against the first defendant, the rest of the theft of the century {Nour Zuhair}, and a 6-year prison sentence against the defendant, Raed Juhi, and a number of employees involved in the theft of tax deposits.
