On Saturday, Karim Aliwi Al-Muhammadawi, a member of parliament from the Badr bloc, called on members of parliament, ministers, and those holding special ranks to donate half or more of their monthly salaries to the state treasury to address the economic crisis.

Al-Muhammadi’s media office said in a statement that “the MP launched an urgent national initiative calling on the House of Representatives, the Iraqi government and all those with special grades, from director general and above, to donate half or more of their monthly salaries to the state treasury.”

Al-Muhammadi stressed, according to the statement, that “this measure should continue for a period ranging from six months to a full year, or until the current economic crisis is overcome,” explaining that “this step aims to find a new financial resource for the state, and to contribute effectively to reducing taxes and customs tariffs that burden the people.”

He stressed the need for “officials, including deputies, ministers, advisors, and directors-general, to take the lead in sacrifice and stand with the state in its ordeal,” considering this concession “a small part of repaying the debt to this great country,” and a step to protect the citizen from the consequences of previous financial crises.

It is noted that the Iraqi government has taken measures in recent months to strengthen treasury resources and address the liquidity crisis, including increasing customs duties and imposing deductions on employee salaries, at a time when the country is experiencing delays in salary payments and a financial shortage.

These measures did not affect the large salaries and privileges of senior officials, which sparked widespread criticism and questions about the fairness of these steps and their impact on employees.
