Parliamentarians are considering dissolving parliament due to the delay in the presidential election sessionMembers of the House of Representatives revealed on Sunday their intention to dissolve Parliament if the failure to achieve a quorum for the session to elect the President of the Republic continues, after the constitutional deadline that ended on January 29 was violated. MP Mahmoud Faleh Al-Sayed, from the Services Alliance, told Al-Sumaria TV that “Parliament proceeded in the right direction regarding the constitutional deadlines by electing the Speaker of Parliament, but recently the Council failed to attend and complete the legal quorum.”

He also pointed out that “the first session to elect the President of the Republic on January 27 did not achieve a quorum, and the last day of the constitutional period was January 29, but today we entered February and we missed the constitutional deadlines and the quorum was still not achieved.”

He also confirmed that “only 75 MPs attended the session, while when you go outside the parliament you find approximately 150 to 200 MPs sitting outside,” considering that “this is a breach of the constitutional oath and we demand the dissolution of the House of Representatives.”

He explained that “a third of the members of parliament can demand the dissolution of the House of Representatives, and indeed there is a trend among some members of parliament who have started collecting signatures. If the situation continues as it is and the quorum for the session is not achieved, then the House of Representatives will be dissolved.”

This step is considered an exceptional development just one month after the establishment of the new parliament. The postponement of the session comes as a result of the lack of a quorum, as the number of attendees at the session was only 75 deputies, while the previous session had 85 deputies. It is believed that this postponement comes as an attempt to buy time and get rid of the embarrassment of “American rejection of Trump,” since when the president of the republic is elected, he will have to assign Maliki directly. Therefore, the political forces need to buy time by not holding a session to elect the president of the republic in the first place.
