Parliament is heading towards a significant reduction in 2021 budget expendituresOn Monday (December 28, 2020), a member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Hussein Al-Oqabi, indicated that the 2021 fiscal budget law will arrive in Parliament next week, indicating that Parliament will significantly reduce budget expenditures.

Al-Oqabi said in a press interview that “the possibility of not approving the 2021 budget is unlikely and must be approved, and that its passage will be delayed because it has not yet arrived.”

He pointed out that “the existing expenditures for the budget amounting to 150 trillion dinars, and Parliament will reduce expenditures to well below that number,” explaining that “the actual spending for 2020 does not exceed 72 trillion.”

He added, “Parliament will work as much as possible to find a general austerity method with current operational expenditures and to conduct certain transfers according to priority and need, and to focus on the investment file and issues that concern the citizen, such as hospitals, municipal services, sewage, water and education.”

The Cabinet voted on the federal general budget for the fiscal year 2021, during the extraordinary session held on Monday (December 21, 2020), headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi.
