MP Duha Al-Sadkhan, from the National Approach Bloc, revealed today, Wednesday, that there are serious parliamentary efforts to resume the legislative and oversight role of Parliament, expecting the House of Representatives to hold its first session in the new legislative term next Monday.
Al-Sadkhan told Al-Maalouma that “the heads of the parliamentary blocs held a closed meeting in the Constitutional Hall inside the parliament building, and despite the lack of official disclosure of the meeting’s agenda or its final outcomes, the moves reflect a real desire to arrange the political papers before the sessions begin.”
She added that “there is broad parliamentary support and solid backing for the recent government measures to combat corruption,” considering that “parliamentary sessions will continue to be held and will not pay attention to or be affected by the political or security upheavals that the country has recently witnessed, while she directed a direct call to expedite the opening of the parliament doors to follow up on the performance of executive institutions and resolve the package of stalled laws.”
Al-Sadkhan pointed out that there are “a large number of vital draft laws that are stalled and require urgent review to resolve the disputes over them, in preparation for putting them to a vote and approving them in a way that serves the public interest.”
These parliamentary moves come at a highly sensitive time for the Iraqi political scene, as parliament faces a true test of its ability to lead and legislate independently of polarization. This activity also coincides with an intensive government campaign to pursue cases of financial and administrative corruption, a campaign that enjoys broad public support but simultaneously faces political complexities requiring strong legislative and oversight backing from parliament to prevent its stalling.
