An informed government source revealed on Sunday that investigations are still ongoing with those detained in connection with Operation Dawn Charge, amid strict measures that included preventing visits and external communication, in order to maintain the confidentiality of the investigations.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that all detainees, including former and current members of parliament and officials facing corruption charges, are subject to daily investigations conducted in secrecy, as part of procedures overseen by specialized investigation teams comprising investigators from the Anti-Corruption Court and the Federal Integrity Commission.
He added that the investigating authorities have imposed a complete ban on visits to detainees by political parties, public figures or any other entities, stressing that the investigations are limited to the specialized teams.
The source indicated that none of the detainees have been able, so far, to appoint lawyers or hold meetings with them, nor have they been allowed any external communication, explaining that these procedures aim to prevent the leakage of information related to the cases under investigation.
He explained that the competent authorities fear that leaking details of the investigations, especially statements or confessions that may include the names of other individuals, could obstruct the course of justice, whether through some suspects leaving the country, concealing evidence, or influencing the course of the investigation.
The source confirmed that the authorities are dealing with this file as one of the most sensitive corruption cases, and that the confidentiality procedures will continue until the completion of essential stages of the investigation and collection of evidence, before moving on to subsequent judicial procedures and announcing the details permitted by the competent authorities.
Informed government sources had previously revealed to Shafaq News Agency that the legal procedures for the second phase of the campaign to pursue those involved in corruption cases, which includes files in the Ministries of Health, Oil and Electricity, have been completed. This phase involves tracking funds, real estate and investment projects belonging to officials in the United States, Europe and Turkey, in conjunction with preparing a new list of names of accused persons, as well as studying the draft law “Where did you get this from?” in preparation for completing its legislative course.
A wave of arrests was launched at dawn on Sunday (June 28), targeting political officials, members of parliament, and businessmen as part of an anti-corruption campaign, which Al-Zaydi described, during a cabinet session, as the “first phase” of broader measures to recover public funds, while tasking oversight bodies with receiving any indications related to cases of corruption or negligence in state institutions.
The Federal Integrity Commission stated that the arrest warrants are being carried out in accordance with the law and under the supervision of the judiciary. According to judicial sources, the investigation data indicates that new files will continue to be opened that may affect other figures in the coming period, as part of efforts to recover public funds and prosecute those involved inside and outside Iraq.
