The Media and Communications Commission announced on Saturday the resumption of Telegram service throughout Iraq, after the application’s management pledged to comply with regulatory requirements in accordance with the provisions of Legislative Order No. 65 of 2004.
The commission stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that it had sent official demands to the application’s management that included a set of regulatory requirements related to content control, user protection, and compliance with the legal frameworks in force in Iraq.
She added that “the resumption of the service came based on the pledges made by the application’s management,” while emphasizing that “the field monitoring will continue to verify the extent to which those commitments are actually implemented on the ground.”
The commission stressed that “all social media platforms operating in Iraq are obligated to fully comply with applicable legislation without exception, in order to ensure the protection of the public interest and national information security,” noting that “the application will return to operation as soon as the Ministry of Communications completes the necessary technical procedures through the approved access gateways.”
The Iraqi government imposed a ban on the Telegram application in all federal governorates (Baghdad, Basra, Najaf, Salah al-Din, Kirkuk, Diyala) starting from the evening of Friday, April 3, 2026, for security reasons related to protecting personal data and limiting the activities of certain channels.
